Why You Will Love These Lettuce Wraps

I've always been a fan of lettuce wraps, especially if they are easy to make, well seasoned, and have simple ingredients. This recipe has 11 ingredients but they combine so well together mixing a hint of acid and tang with rich and earthy flavors.

Using ground beef (or chicken), this recipe has become a family favorite. It's also versatile — if you don't want to make lettuce wraps, you can always add the seasoned meat to a tortilla. You can drizzle more soy sauce and sesame oil on top, or serve with a dipping sauce on the side.

What Makes This Recipe Different?

This recipe contains cornstarch which is usually not in your average lettuce wraps. This ingredient is used to thicken the sauce which I love because it provides a thicker flavor and coats the ground beef easier.

We also use sesame oil in this recipe to add a nutty, rich and earthy flavor palette.

Inspiration

The original recipe that I used is from The Cookie Rookie for PF Changs Lettuce Wraps.

We did change quite a bit of ingredients to make it our own including:
• Using ground beef in place of chicken
• Eliminated the sriracha
• Used onion powder instead of diced onion
• Used regular lettuce in place of butter lettuce
• Swapped out minced garlic for garlic powder
• Replaced grated ginger with ground ginger
• Eliminated water chestnuts (although they are a great choice!)

How to Store and Reheat Seasoned Ground Beef

If you have leftover ground beef, store it separately in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days. Reheat in the microwave for two minutes, or until warm.

Adjust to Your Liking

  • If you want a spicy lettuce wrap, you can add in sriracha or red pepper flakes
  • You can swap out ground beef for diced chicken
  • If you like crunch, you can add coleslaw or peanuts on top of your lettuce wraps
  • To reduce the salty flavor, try a light or low-sodium soy sauce
  • Add a little honey or brown sugar for a touch of sweetness

  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 pound ground beef (we use 93/7)
  • 2 tbsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • Green onions, to top
  • 1 head of lettuce for serving

How to Make Ground Beef Lettuce Wraps (Step-by-Step)

✓ Step #1 Make sauce
In a bowl, combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, and cornstarch. Stir and set aside.

✓ Step #2 Cook the ground beef
In a skillet over medium heat, add the sesame oil. Let it sit for a minute or two before adding the ground beef. Sauté and break apart. Cook on medium-high until browned, about 5–7 minutes.

✓ Step #3 Add in remainder ingredients
Once the ground beef is browned (and even a little crispy), add onion powder, garlic powder, and ground ginger. Move the heat to high and cook for two more minutes.

✓ Step #4 Add the sauce
Re-stir the sauce if needed and pour it into the skillet. Stir until the beef is evenly coated. Add the green onions and remove from heat.

✓ Step #5 Make your lettuce wraps
Fill a piece of lettuce with beef and top with peanuts, cashews, sriracha, more soy sauce, cabbage, or your choice of toppings. Serve immediately!
