Sweet Potato Cheeseburgers
Sweet Potato Cheeseburgers? What?
I never thought that making a sweet potato cheeseburger would actually be as delicious as it sounds. Using sweet potatoes as hamburger buns and biting into a soft potato was so different, yet surprisingly delicious. The sweet potatoes added a unique flavor and made a flavorful alternative to traditional hamburger buns.
If you are looking for new ways to incorporate sweet potatoes into your regular meals, this is the recipe you will want to try.
• Difficulty Level: Easy
• Servings: 1 serving
• Family friendly: Yes
• Total cook time: 30 minutes
Flavorful, messy, and soft sweet potatoes. You will want to add these to your next menu!
What Makes This Sweet Potato Cheeseburger So Unique?
While the meat and cheese are standard for cheeseburgers, sweet potato circles are used as the bun so it creates a different texture. It's messier than your regular cheeseburgers but fairly delicious and adds more flavor than a standard bun. I added smoked paprika, garlic powder and onion powder to the sweet potatoes. It's a fun and unique way to incorporate nutrients and health benefits into one meal.
What Inspired This Sweet Potato Recipe?
I have been enjoying sweet potatoes more (check out my Sweet Potato Taco Bowls) and found a recipe online that replaced hamburger buns with sweet potato slices so I thought I would try it. Cheeseburgers are my absolute favorite but as I've been going to the gym more, I've also been wanting to adjust my diet when and where I can.
Why These Sweet Potato Cheeseburgers Work
They are fairly easy to make with a maximum cook time of 30 minutes. I also thought that since the sweet potatoes would be roasted, that they would be hard but they were actually really soft, so soft that the burger fell apart.
What I Would Do Differently Next Time
I would definitely make the sweet potato "buns" thinner. As you can see, they are thicker like a hamburger bun but I think if I halved them, the sweet potato flavor would be less and I could taste the burger more which is the balance I wanted. Next time I'm going to have the buns be around 1-inch thick.
I made enough sweet potato "buns" for two servings but only had one. I noticed that reheating the sweet potato "buns" were not as good so I think it's best to eat immediately.
FAQ
Do I have to season the sweet potatoes?
You don't have to but it does add flavor to the burger. I seasoned mine with smoked paprika, garlic and onion powder. You can also add black pepper, dill weed seasoning, or any seasonings of your choice.
Does it taste like an actual cheeseburger?
No. The texture and flavor will both be different. The meat and cheese will taste like they should but the bun will taste different. This recipe is for those who want to incorporate sweet potatoes or want to find unique ways to make a meal.
What are the benefits of sweet potatoes?
They are rich in fiber and offer a great addition to a balanced diet. They support eye health, contain fiber, Vitamin A and C, and help with healthy skin support.
